Calendar Designs

Here is a calendar i found from the internet. Its bright colours are the first thing you notice. The way they are layed out in rows i feel makes it easier to notice the months as the colour stands out. Also the white colour scheme for the type sits well on the colors chosen as its clear to read. I feel it was a creative to place the '2014' on the side as its out the way but still looks involved well in the design. 

When creating my final design i could add blocks of colour to help it stand out.

Here is a second calendar i found from the internet. I don't really like this calendar. It has dull colour which makes it boring and less appealing to look at. It also has boring text which doesn't stand out also. The two things i do like is the placement of the image. I feel that where its placed gives the image its own little space which makes it noticeable. Another thing i liked about this calendar is the map on the left hand side. I feel it makes the calendar more interesting to look at as you find out something new. 

When creating my final design i could think about placing my image in its own space to make it more noticeable.

Keegan Gibbs

Keengan Gibbs

Keegan Gibbs was born into a family of artists and raised by the sea. He derscribes his photography as a method to express his love of ‘all things salt water.’

Since he graduated film school several years ago, Gibbs has spent a lion’s share of his time surfing, taking photos, and shooting videos. ‘I surf as much as I possibly can,’ he says. His website can be considered a diary as well as a creative portfolio.

Here is a photograph taken by Keegan Gibbs. This photograph has been taken from a distance which makes this shot look more interesting. The angle its taken at is also adds a great effect to the shot. I feel that the photograph being black and white sets a great look and makes it look more calming and detailed.

When taking my photographs i could take some at an angle to give it a different look.

Here is a second photograph taken by Keegan Gibbs. This photograph has also been taken from quite a distance. By doing this he has included the amazing background to the left with all the big buildings which helps this photograph to stand out and look interesting. The lighting in this photograph looks nice, its bright and golden which makes it stand out.

When taking my photographs of signage i could take some from a distance to include interesting objects in the shot.

Here is a third photograph taken by Keegan Gibbs. This photograph has been taken at night which i feel helps bring out the graffiti's colour. It looks bright and gives it an interesting effect. Keegan Gibbs captured the graffiti and also the interesting atmosphere on the left which i feel stands out because of the bright lights which makes this photograph look creative and inspiring.

When taking my photographs of signage i could take them a night instead of daylight to help bring out the colours in the photograph.

12 Photographs I Didn't Choose

I didn’t choose this photograph to be in my final design because i felt it didn’t have that interesting effect i was looking for. I also felt that the distance i captured the signage at wasn’t too great as some of the lettering is hard to read.

I didn’t choose this photograph to be in my final design because i felt there was other photographs that were more effective than this one however i still felt the photograph looks great mainly because of where the signage was. 

I didn’t choose this photograph to be in my final design because i felt that this signage was boring and plain however there is a lot of type which would of looked great if it got cropped and colour was added.

Even though two pieces of signage have been captured in this image which reflects Robert Brownjohns work, i didn’t feel it was effective enough as my other photographs therefore i didn’t choose to use it to manipulate and add to my final design.

I didn't choose this photograph to be in my final design because i felt the signage should have been captured close to get a better effect. I feel there are better photographs that have been taken so i decided to not use this one.

I didn't choose this photograph to be in my final design because of the quality of the photograph. There is too much noise which makes it look cheap and unprofessional. The signage was also boring compared to the others that were chosen. 

Final Designs/Evaluation

Being able to create a calendar for the creative industry was a great project as the opportunity to create something that was going to be used was inspirational. 

Reaching my final outcome i managed to design a piece that i was happy with as it turned out to how i wanted it to look. Taking inspiration from some of the photographs i looked at and taking main inspiration from Robert Brownjohns work i was able to create a calendar with 12 of my own manipulated photographs of signage. 

My strengths for this project i feel was designing the calendar. Taking some inspiration from Robert Brownjohns photography i got a chance to get creative with my photo taking which was something that i enjoyed doing.  

My weaknesses for this project i feel was the idea generation side as at the beginning i was struggling to pick out an idea i felt would look great however i finally ended up creating an idea that satisfied me.

If i were to change something i would have organised my time better to capture some better images in and around Dunstable.

Overall i feel this was a great project

My Chosen Photographs Manipulated

Here are my 12 chosen designs that have been manipulated and are ready to be added to my final calendar design.

Here is my first manipulated photograph. Firstly i cropped the image slightly to take out what i didn’t need. I then turned the photograph from colour to black and white by using the Hue/Saturation tool. I done this as it helps bring the detail out even better. The bush was easier to see once i turned it into black and white which i feel gives the photograph a better look. 

Here i then added colour to larger part of type on the signage by using the paint bucket tool. I chose red as its bright which stands out on the photograph. I left the other type as i wanted the photograph to look interesting and different.

Here is my second manipulated photograph. Firstly i cropped the photograph a little to take out the unnecessary space. Here I done the same thing and turned it into black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool which really brought out the lettering and made it shine. I done this as it helps bring out all that is hard to be seen when its in colour.

Here I then added color with the paint bucket tool to the bottom text so it immediately grabs attention and makes the photograph look more interesting. I left the other type as i wanted to make the photograph look unique.

Here is my third manipulated photograph. Firstly i cropped the photograph to take out all that i don’t need. I then transformed the photograph from colour into black and white once again by using the Hue/Saturation tool because i felt it helps the leafless bush look more effective as it has more detail.

Before adding colour i turned down the opacity to 50%, I then added colour to part of the bush surrounding the signage with the paint bucket tool to help the photograph have some creativity and also to make it look different. I added colour to the type using the same tool so the lettering stands out on the white background.  

Here is my fourth manipulated photograph. Here i cropped it quite a lot to take out all the space around as i felt it was not needed. I then changed it from colour to black and white by using the Hue/Saturation tool to help give it a better look once colour is added somewhere on the photograph.

Here i then added colour by using the paint bucket tool too two parts of type to make the photograph stand out more.

Here is my fifth manipulated photograph. Here i only cropped the image from the left to take out most of space that was in the original photograph, this was to make the signage look more included in the photograph. I also changed the photograph from colour to black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool to bring out the detail of the wall. 

Here i added colour to the CCTV illustration and ‘CCTV’ by using the paint bucket tool. I used the colour light green because i wanted this photograph to stand out and look effective. 

Here is my sixth manipulated photograph. Here i cropped most of the image because i felt that the signage needed to be recognized more than anything that was captured. I also turned it from colour into black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool which helped the lettering become clearer.

Here is my seventh manipulated photograph. Here i cropped the image a little just so that the main attraction is the signage. I transformed this photograph from colour to black and white by using the Hue/Saturation tool which i felt gave it a great effect as the scratches look more detailed.

Here i added colour with the paint bucket tool. I used the colour cream as i felt it helped bring out the lettering on the letterbox a lot more. I turned the opacity down before applying it to help it to blend in the photograph.

Here is my eighth manipulated photograph. I cropped this photo quite a lot because i wanted the lettering to be big and clear for a better effect. I also turned the photograph from colour to black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool which i felt makes this look much better as the flooring has great detail and so does the signage.

Here i added colour with the paint bucket tool. I chose the colour yellow because its a bright colour that helps the lettering stand out.

Here is my ninth manipulated photograph. I cropped this down a lot so its only the signage being seen as i felt that this signage has a great dirty look that has good detail and makes this photograph look interesting. I also transformed this photograph from colour into black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool which is the same as my other photographs, this is to keep the flow of black and white going throughout my calendar and also to show the great detail of the dirt and rust on the signage.

 

Here i added colour  to the lettering with the paint bucket tool to bring out the photograph. I used the colour blue because its different, it stands out yet its not too bright which looks good on this photograph.

Here is my tenth manipulated photograph. I cropped down the signage so i can only have the lettering and the little ball on the right so your eyes are drawn to the lettering straight away, the ball just adds effect. I changed it to black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool to keep the flow and also so that the lettering stands out more when i use colour.

Here i added colour using the paint bucket tool to the lettering only leaving one letter out to make it stand out in a different way. I chose the colour green because it suits the photograph.

Here is my eleventh manipulated photograph. I cropped the image from the right to take out the shutter because i felt that there was too much unneeded space. I also wanted the signage to stand out more. I changed the photograph to black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool to keep the flow and also to bring out the style of Robert Brownjohns Street Level Series photography work.

Here i added colour using the paint bucket tool to parts in the photograph to make it look more appealing and creative.  I chose the colour orange because its different to the colours i have used already.

Here is my twelfth manipulated photograph. Here i cropped most of the photograph so the signage was the main thing that can be seen. I then changed the photograph from colour to black and white using the Hue/Saturation tool because i was inspired by Robert Brownjohns Street Level Series work. I also done this to make the signage look clearer.

Here i added colour to the last 4 letters in the photograph and the grass beneath by using the paint bucket tool. I chose to leave the rest of the lettering in black and white as i wanted the photograph to look different but creative.  I chose the colour pink because its different to the colours i have used already and it also stands out.
